NFL · Clutch call
Up 1, 4th & 2 at the opponent’s 33. 1:55 left (after the 2-minute warning). You have 1 timeout, they have 2. Calm weather. Your kicker is 2/4 from 50+ (long of 53). You’re a top short-yardage run team vs. a top-5 run defense. What’s the call?
A 50-yard FG puts you up 4 (forcing a TD), but a miss gives them the ball at their own 40. Converting 4th & 2 nearly ices it; failing leaves them at their own 33 needing only a field goal. Punting risks a touchback to the 20.
- AKick the 50-yarder — good and you’re up 4, forcing them to score a touchdown
- BRun it up the middle — convert 4th & 2 to bleed the clock while they burn timeouts
- CPlay-action pass to the flat — catch them selling out for the run to convert and seal the game
- DPunt and try to pin them deep — trust your defense to hold a 1-point lead
